Convocation Talk 2011 - 為中國而立?為香港而立!港大創校百年反思

香港大學在創校時有所謂「為中國而立」的說法,戰後,中國政治環境改變,港大在1958年
修訂香港大學條例時把這一段刪去;香港大學起初是否為中國而立?為甚麼要為中國而立?
成效如何?戰後如何確立為香港而立的定位?辛亥革命與港大創校有何關連?西醫書院是否
等同香港大學?港大成立應否從西醫書院(1887)計算起等問題,一直眾說紛紜,爭議不絕;
是年為港大百年校慶,也是辛亥革命一百週年,本講座將就以上問題一一剖析解說,藉以引發
對港大百年的一些反思。

講者簡介:
丁新豹,香港大學文學士、哲學碩士、哲學博士,前香港歷史博物館總館長,任內籌建了
香港歷史博物館新館、香港海防博物館及孫中山紀念館。 現為香港大學客席助理教授、
香港中文大學客席教授及名譽高級研究員、英國皇家亞洲學會香港分會的榮譽研究員、
香港地方志辦公室副主任及香港和內地多個文博單位之顧問或委員。

Reflections on a Century of HKU

In celebration of the HKU Centenary, Convocation has invited Dr Joseph S.P. Ting, an HKU graduate and former Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History, to give a talk on the role of HKU in Hong Kong, China and the world. Dr Ting will reflect on thesignificant events that led to the founding of HKU, and explore how the role and position of HKU have evolved in the past century.

Joseph S.P. Ting, HKU graduate (BA, MPhil, PhD HK), former Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History, he is currently the Honorary Assistant Professor of the Department of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong, Adjunct Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the Department of History, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Deputy Director of the Local Records Office and advisor/member of various local and Mainland museums and cultural institutes.
